Everyone is a winner at Holmfirth Junior Badminton Club : Xmas Tournament 2011
Holmfirth Badminton Club held their Junior Xmas Badminton Tournament at Honley High School on Monday 12th Dec 2011. This was their second season running the Junior Club after being part subsidised by BADMINTON England last season when it was initiated. Holmfirth coach and tournament organizer Zainal Muhammad said that the turn out this season have been encouraging with the juniors being very keen to learn. He added that junior sports especially in the Change4Life and Enrichment programmes in schools and colleges should continue to be fully supported as an example of healthy well being for our present and future generations.
The tournament was based on team format, Reds vs. Blues and was played in a round robin fashion for maximum points in a fixed time period. The juniors were aged mainly between 11yrs -15yrs old but for Louis Cromack who is six. A handicap system of differing court boundaries was introduced to allow for the different ages and abilities. Louis showed good determination and managed well to contribute seven points towards his team winning total of 259 against 238 from the Blues.
The prizes were given away by Holmfirth Club Secretary, Janet Winn. The Reds won the Silver Salver trophy and the gold medals whilst Runner-up Blues received their silver medals. In recognition for participation everyone was presented with a BADMINTON England Drawstring bag.
An additional award for "Skills Achievement" was won by 12 year old Daniel Whitworth who managed a resultant 51 net shots over the net in five minutes with both Forehand and Backhand strokes. He was awarded the vouchers for free two hour One to One private coaching with the Club's coach.
2012 beckons and the club is already preparing for the coaching programme from the 9th January 2012 with a view to run another tournament in spring. For further details of the programme contact the club secretary.
